Would You Run a Handmade Carbon Downtube Protector on Your Gravel Bike?

Gravel bikes are getting faster, lighter, and more capable every year. At the same time, more riders are taking them onto rougher roads, chunkier gravel, and terrain that would have been firmly in mountain-bike territory not that long ago. That raises a pretty simple question. Is having your bare downtube exposed to rocks, logs, and debris asking for frame damage? Is the stick on rubber downtube protector enough?

Would you want a purpose-built carbon fiber downtube protector for your gravel bike?

At Natural State Carbon Repair, we’ve actually made carbon downtube protectors for individual frames in the past. They were custom-made solutions for specific bikes and riders, rather than something we offered as a ready to order product but we’re now considering changing that.

Before investing the time into developing molds, refining the designs, and producing them in small batches, we’d like to gauge how much interest there is in making these handmade carbon frame protectors available directly through Natural State Carbon Repair. We want your input!

Why a Carbon Downtube Protector?

If you ride rough gravel, you know how much abuse the underside of a frame can take. We have all heard a rogue rock that makes our skin crawl. The front tire constantly throws rocks and debris directly toward the downtube. On fast descents, even relatively small pieces of gravel can hit the frame with surprising force. Most modern gravel bikes have some type of protection built into the frame, but there’s still a big difference between a thin protective film and a physical layer designed to take repeated impacts. A carbon downtube protector could provide that additional layer of protection while keeping the bike light and maintaining a clean appearance.

The idea is something thin, lightweight, low-profile, and specifically shaped for the frame it’s protecting.

We are thinking we will start with Crux 5

The Specialized Crux 5 is one of the frames we’re particularly interested in developing a protector for. The Crux has become a popular choice for riders who want a gravel bike that can be extremely fast while still having enough capability for rough terrain. With modern builds allowing substantially larger tires than traditional gravel race bikes, it’s increasingly common to see Crux bikes being ridden well beyond smooth gravel roads. A lightweight carbon protector could provide some additional insurance against the rock strikes that inevitably come with riding a bike like this hard.

And the Crux wouldn’t necessarily be the only frame.

Other Gravel Bikes We’re Considering

If there’s enough interest, we’d like to develop protectors for several of the popular carbon gravel bikes currently being ridden and raced.

Some of the bikes we’re considering include:

  • Trek Checkpoint

  • Giant Revolt

  • Canyon Grizl

  • Canyon Grail

  • Lauf Seigla

  • Other popular carbon gravel frames

We’re particularly interested in bikes that are being pushed toward the rougher end of the gravel spectrum.

The gravel category has changed quite a bit. Riders are putting larger tires on lightweight carbon race bikes, entering increasingly rough events, and using the same bike for everything from fast gravel racing to long backcountry adventures.

Frame protection needs to evolve along with that.

Handmade, Not Mass Produced

One of the things that makes this idea different from a typical aftermarket frame protector is how we’d make them. We would start by 3D scanning the downtube of a test bike and creating our molds based on that. These wouldn’t be mass-produced plastic accessories coming off an injection molding machine. The idea is to make them here at Natural State Carbon Repair using the same carbon fiber skills, materials, and processes we use for our repair work.

That approach allows us to keep the designs relatively simple and lightweight while creating something that looks much more integrated with the frame than a generic universal protector while providing a higher level of frame protection.

It also means these would be a small-batch product rather than something we keep thousands of units on a shelf.

What Would We Want the Design to Do?

Our goal would be to strike a balance between weight, protection, and appearance.

Ideally, a protector would:

  • Follow the contours of the frame

  • Cover the area most vulnerable to rock strikes

  • Provide meaningful physical impact protection

  • Add as little weight as reasonably possible

  • Have a clean, finished appearance

  • Look like it belongs on the bike rather than being an afterthought

We’re considering making handmade carbon downtube protectors commercially available through Natural State Carbon Repair, but we don’t want to build a bunch of molds for bikes nobody wants protection for.
